Hotel Description

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked down Don Carlos Alonso Chaparro – it’s one of those narrow cobblestone streets in Seville’s old quarter that tourists usually rush past on their way to the cathedral. But Hotel Casa Del Poeta stopped me in my tracks, and I mean that literally because the entrance is so understated you could miss it if you’re not paying attention. The name translates to “House of the Poet,” which actually makes perfect sense once you’re inside – there’s this literary, almost bohemian vibe that feels authentically Spanish rather than tourist-friendly fake.

The thing about staying in Seville’s old town is that you’re either going to love the authentic chaos or hate the lack of modern conveniences, and Casa Del Poeta somehow manages to give you the best of both worlds. Your room keys still feel substantial in your hand (none of those flimsy plastic cards), and the building itself has these gorgeous Andalusian details – think hand-painted tiles and wrought iron that’s actually from the 19th century, not some reproduction. But here’s what I really appreciated: the air conditioning actually works, which trust me, matters a lot when you’re dealing with Seville summers. The rooms aren’t huge – we’re talking European boutique hotel proportions – but they’re designed smartly, and honestly, you’re not going to spend much time inside anyway when you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Giralda.

What really sold me on this place was how the staff treated the neighborhood like their own backyard, because well, it sort of is. The woman at reception (I think her name was Carmen, but don’t quote me on that) sent me to this tiny tapas place around the corner that doesn’t even have a sign – just look for the blue door next to the pharmacy, she said. And you know what? Best jamón ibérico I had in the entire city. That’s the kind of local knowledge you can’t fake. The hotel sits right in the thick of things but on a quiet enough street that you won’t have drunk tourists stumbling past your window at 3 AM, which is more than I can say for some of the places near Plaza de Armas. Parking is pretty much impossible right at the hotel – this is medieval Seville, after all – but there’s a public garage about a ten-minute walk away, and honestly, you’ll want to ditch the car anyway once you realize how walkable everything is from here. The 9.5 rating this place gets makes total sense to me because it delivers on what actually matters: genuine character, a location that puts you in the heart of real Seville, and staff who clearly give a damn about your experience without being overly fussy about it.

Excellent hotel in historic building, decorated and furnished to a high standard. Excellent location in old town giving quick access to the major sights, restaurants and bars. Staff were very welcoming and helpful.

What could be improved: Noise at night from adjacent building rooftop on one night but ok on other nights.

The hotel is in an ideal location in the Barrio Santa Cruz. The Alcazar and Cathedral are a stone's throw away and other sights like the Placa d'Espagna and San Basilio neighborhood are an easy walk. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. We received an orientation upon arrival. They made dinner reservations for us each of our three nights. Each restaurant was very different and a wonderful choice within a five minute walk of the hotel. They arranged a tour of the Barrio Santa Cruz with a fabulous guide. She brought the history alive in a way we could never have appreciated had we just walked the area. The hotel has a splendid courtyard where we enjoyed a drink and live classical guitar each evening before dinner. You can eat breakfast in the courtyard as well and it is a a wonderful breakfast. Our room was spacious and well appointed. Good lighting and a good bed. Definitely have the hotel arrange for your taxi from and to the train station or airport. The drivers then know how to get you close to the hotel and assit with your luggage as you cannot be dropped off or picked up at the door.
