Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to the Palacio de los Marqueses de Monsalud – I mean, it’s tucked away on this narrow cobblestone street in Seville’s old quarter, and from the outside it looks almost modest compared to some of the flashier hotels around the cathedral area. But then you step through those heavy wooden doors and, well, it hits you immediately that this place has serious history baked into every tile and archway.

The thing about staying here is that you’re literally sleeping in a converted 18th-century palace, and they’ve done this incredible job of keeping all the original architectural details while actually making it comfortable for modern travelers. The courtyard – and every proper Sevillian palace has one – is where you’ll probably end up spending your mornings with coffee, listening to the fountain and watching the light change on those gorgeous azulejo tiles. You know what I love about the location on Calle San Vicente? You’re deep enough into the Barrio de Santa Cruz that you miss most of the tourist chaos, but you can still walk to the Alcázar in maybe eight minutes, and the cathedral’s practically around the corner. Actually, fair warning – if you’re a light sleeper, ask for a room facing the courtyard rather than the street, because those delivery trucks start rumbling over the cobblestones pretty early, and sound really carries in these narrow medieval streets.

What really gets me about this place is how the staff seems to actually know Seville – not just the obvious stuff, but they’ll point you toward that tiny tapas place on Calle Mateos Gago that doesn’t even have a sign, or tell you the best time to hit the rooftop bars in the Alameda district when they’re not packed with cruise ship crowds. The rooms themselves have this perfect balance of old-world charm and modern comfort (the beds are honestly fantastic, and the air conditioning works – crucial for Seville summers). I stayed in one of the suites overlooking the courtyard and spent way too much time just watching the interplay of shadows and sunlight on those ancient walls. The breakfast setup isn’t huge, but it’s quality stuff, and you can eat it in that stunning dining room with the original frescoed ceiling, which beats a generic hotel restaurant any day. Look, parking in this part of Seville is basically impossible, so either embrace walking everywhere or plan to use the hotel’s garage – it costs extra but saves your sanity. This isn’t a place where you’ll find a massive pool or a spa, but if you want to feel like you’re living inside Seville’s history while still having genuinely comfortable accommodations and staff who care about your experience, it’s pretty hard to beat.

  Excellent location on a quiet street close to both the bus station and the historic center. Washing machine and dishwasher were both welcome for our 6 night stay. Very functional well equipped kitchen.
